EXTRA FEATURES OF NORTON SYSTEMWORKS

Norton SystemWorks has some extra features that can help keep you computer running and virus free. Even though LiveUpdate runs every time you connect to the Internet, it is still a good idea to run it from the Norton window occasionally. You will want to be sure that you get all of the virus definitions as soon as they are available.

Open the Norton window and click on the LiveUpdate button, let it run, when it is finished close all sub-folders and a button called Begin Checkup will appear, click this button and follow the directions, if you have errors click the Fix Errors button, then after it is done run the scan again to make sure all of them got fixed.

Click on the Norton Utilities button to the right of the Norton window, this opens a list of features that can really make a difference in the way your computer runs and acts.
First run Norton WinDoctor by double clicking it and following the instructions. If any problems are found click the fix all button at the top of the window. Rerun WinDoctor to be sure it fixed all of the errors. Then close the windows back to the main Norton window.

Click the Optimize Performance button, and then double click Speed Disk, this feature will rearrange your most often used programs so they are quicker to find. Follow the instructions; it is a good idea to run this every week or two and to run it twice when you do. The before and after view of your hard drive will give you an idea of how much it helps your computer.

When you are done with Optimizing, close the sub-heading and click the Norton AntiVirus button, then double click my computer, let it run your virus scan. This needs done at least once a week and I do it every time I spend a lot of time on the Internet. You can also use this window to scan various parts of your computer including your floppy disks and CDs, but there is a simpler, easier way to scan those. Close out of the Norton window and return to your Desk Top.

Having had virus problems you will need to run a scan on every floppy and CD you use in your computer, both the ones you created and the ones you receive from other sources. If you down load something from the Internet and save it to either floppy or CD you need to scan it before you use it again. Yes, Norton is supposed to do this for you but it is better to be safe than sorry later.

The easiest way to scan floppies and CDs is to double click the My Computer ICON on your desktop. This opens up all your drive information and should show your floppy drive as A-drive, your CD drive as D-drive, insert the disk you want to scan into the drive, (don't let it run) and then right click the drive Icon, from the drop down menu choose the Scan with Norton option and double click, then let it run. Doing this can save you a lot of trouble, this is one of the major ways that a virus can spread from network to network, computer to computer within an office.

If you need assistance with any of these items, open the Contact page for information about how to contact BCS Computers for service. No appointment is necessary to bring your computer in for service.
